Report card for week of July 29

1. YOU MUST FINISH RILEY'S DRESS BEFORE THEY GET BACK FROM BEACH.  PASS!!!

It's amazing what a $5 Walmart dress can look like when you add a little embroidery!!!  It's also amazing how long it takes to do something so simple when you haven't done embroidery in about 3 or 4 months!!!  Geesh -- I could have probably quilted a whole quilt in the time it took.  There were a lot of "do you remember how to ..." sentences in the making of this little applique.  (Note to appliquers - if the design doesn't look like it "fills" on the computer, it is not going to fill when you sew it out.  I questioned the first font design, and wonder of wonders, decided to try it out before sewing it onto dress.  Glad I did as it sewed out just like the pic on the software said it would - with large spaces between some of the stitches.)

2. TV time - Primitive Gathering BOM - PASS

July is finished and July isn't even over!!!  How could this happen???

3. Make a decision on the drapes. STOP stalling -- either say yes or no. PASS  I decided I am going to make these drapes.  Luckily my goal was to make a decision and not actually DO any sewing!

4. Make last set of paper pieced "L's" for double wedding ring.  FAIL  This was a stretch as I knew it was going to be a busy week.  Spent a day in Hattiesburg with Nick looking for an apartment and various other "weekly" stuff, so no machine time last week.

However, since I finished this month's BOM I had NO handwork!!!  Can't sit in front of the Olympics without something in my hands.  I got out a beautiful wool applique small piece I bought in Salt Lake City.  Besides the design, I LOVED the wool they used in their kit.  When I opened the kit to cut out the pieces I found out why I loved it -- there was a little tag inside that said "all wools are from Primitive Gatherings."  Of course -- they do have some of the most beautiful dyed wools there are!!!  I've ordered my Valdani from them and as soon as it gets here I can start.  Wonder which package I'll get from Primitive Gatherings first -- BOM or thread????

As usual, the pictures don't do the wool justice.

Goals for this week:

1.  Find something else for handwork until a Primitive Gathering package arrives in the mail.

2.  Get curtain panel finished and up.

3.  Make L's for double wedding ring.

May be tough to meet all goals since I'm keeping Jackson today and we are moving Nick this week.  BUT I need a little sewing time to keep my sanity.  Maybe things will work out.  :)

Report card for week of July 22

1. Machine embroider Riley's name on dress.  FAIL.  However, in my defense, they went to Florida and won't be back until Saturday.  SURELY I'll have it done by them.

2. TV time - work on Primitive Gatherings July BOM.  PASS

I might actually finish this month's BOM before the next month's arrival.

3. Make prayer quilt.

With Mom's help and Mic's scraps, got this one made.  LOVE IT!!!  Still needs to be quilted and tied.

4.  Make curtain panel.  FAIL.  Didn't have/take time to work on that (decided I'd rather put up another bushel of peas.)  I'm at a conundrum on this one.  I have the fabric (close to $300), but I really DON'T want to make them because they are such a hassle.  I'm trying to decide what is the best -- scrap the whole project and pick some up at a big box store -- or carry on and git'r'done???  Still percolating on that one.

UPDATE: I did get one of my failed goals accomlished.  India's quilt is hand delivered!!!

Goals for next week:

1.  YOU MUST FINISH RILEY'S DRESS BEFORE THEY GET BACK FROM BEACH.

2.  TV time - Primitive Gathering BOM

3.  Make a decision on the drapes.  STOP stalling -- either say yes or no.

4.  Make last set of paper pieced "L's" for double wedding ring.

Report card for week ending July 15

1. Curtains for living room.  NOT SURE WHAT THE GRADE IS SINCE THE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE CHANGED.

Finished one panel.  Forgot how long it takes to make these curtains - plus it's boring!!!  New plan - finish one panel a week.  That's about all I can stand!  :)

2. TV time - finish Primitive Gatherings BOM.  PASS
Finished the day the new block came, so that's why I'm giving this a pass.
3. If curtains are finished before Sunday (ha!) continue work on double wedding ring.  NO GRADE HERE - SEE ABOVE!

4. Machine embroider Riley's name on dress Cary brought in APRIL!!!  FAIL

Moving two kids out of a house (and totally cleaning house) and moving one into a new house took LOTS of my time.  Didn't even have time to think about it!

GOALS FOR THIS WEEK:

1.  Machine embroider Riley's name on dress.

2.  TV time - work on Primitive Gatherings July BOM.

3.  Make prayer quilt - needed a prayer quilt.  Luckily this one just needed a binding.  Don't want to be caught at the last minute again.

The quilt is not pregnant. That is the drapes underneath!

4.  Make one curtain panel.

Report card for week ending July 8

Not a good week for sewing.  My ADD got me and somehow decided I needed to put vegetables in the freezer.  So two days I spent time putting up a bushel of lady peas and cut, cooked and froze 4 dozen ears of creamed corn.  However, I did get a few things done.

1. Finish prayer quilt.  Fail plus

Very plain.  Originally planned to run another line next to each of the lines to add more interest, but decided this was enough.

I have finished quilting this one.  Still need to bind and tie floss into centers of blocks.

2. Finish double wedding ring melons.  Pass

Yea!  All 84 are done!

3. TV work - Primitive Gathering BOM - try to finish June before July block gets here!  Pass

Only passed because the other block isn't here yet!  Eight little flowers to go.

4. Finish 1 barn BOM. Pass

Of course I passed this one.  It's easy and takes less than an hour.

5. Experiment with free motioning on the long arm (depends on non-conflicting schedules with Mic).  Fail
You really need to check your backing that you bought for something else when you decide to put it on a different quilt.  The difference in 6 inches is bigger than you'd think!

6. Deliver India's quilt.  Fail plus
Put it in bag, (a birthday bag, but I'm being a good steward and using what I have.  It's going in the trash anyway!) got the tissue paper, wrote LONG letter, made arrangements to deliver it to her today while she is working at the kids' water place at the park in Florence.  However the deluge of rain sent her home.  I am SO HAPPY that I didn't get this one totally finished if that's what it took for us to get a little bit of rain.

Goals for next week:

1.  Curtains for living room.
2.  TV time - finish Primitive Gatherings BOM.
3.  If curtains are finished before Sunday (ha!) continue work on double wedding ring.
4.  Machine embroider Riley's name on dress Cary brought in APRIL!!!

See ya' next week!

Report card for week ending July 1

1. Make top for prayer quilt.  Pass with flying colors!

Other than two of the purple strip fabrics (from Mom's fabric closet), 100% from stash. Although it could have been more interesting, sticking to a few fabrics was much quicker and didn't require all the thinking about "where to put this" and "does this or that look better."  It is nice and bright.  Now put on our safety goggles before you scroll down to see the back.

This is WAY bluer and purpler in real life.  Really TOO blue and purple, but I'm determined to use what I have when something close will work.  I made the strip blocks for front from fat quarters, which yielded two blocks from each strip (after sewing them together, of course).  I know why I had a blue leftover - the blues were an odd number.  Guess my math non-finesse really showed when I had two extra purples.  I was glad though, as I used every inch of the blue florally fake batik (I love that fabric) and had enough of the purple from the back of India's quilt to make the binding and fill in the holes on the backing.

2. Make a decision on India's quilt and "gitterdone."

It's done!  I really wanted to put the perle cotton addition, BUT it is July, she'll be leaving for college soon and I have other things I want to do!  In my note to her it says this is a college utility quilt and when she gets married I'll make her a "pretty" one.  :)  It's labeled, strings trimmed and in the wash.

3. Double wedding ring - Finish star blocks if HOP fabric gets here. Continue work on melons.  Pass - still waiting on HOP fabric I ordered.

Finished half the melon a/k/a feather blocks

4. TV work - Primitive Gathering BOM Pass

It's amazing what 5 hours in at the hospital and in a doctor's waiting room will get you in the applique department!

5. Finish 1 barn BOM.    Pass.

I have decided I don't like the way this quilt is put together on the pattern, so I've been percolating ideas. When I signed up (about six years ago), I saw it in person and it was really cute, but either my tastes have changed or it's one of those that looks LOTS better in person.  I LOVE everything I'm making, but this one is just pure-de-fun.
I'm very pleased and getting a lot done.  However, at the end of the coming week I may take a break from quilting.  I've had the curtains cut out for the living room about 1 year (I kid you not -- worse than that, I ordered and received the fabric about TWO years ago!) and I need to make those babies.   Don't want to fool with them this week since there is a holiday.  One reason they aren't done is they aren't easy!  Plus I have to move everything to the dining room so I have the big dining table for all the yardage.  Oh poor me!  I'm sure there are lots of folks that would love to have MY "problems!"

Picked up a humongo tub of Orvus this week at the Tractor Supply Store if anyone needs any.  Did lots of research on what Orvus actually is and how it works.  Very interesting!  One of the places I read recommended this for when you want to pre-wash quilt kit pieces but they are very small:

Don't know if you can tell from the pic, but it is the back of an old knit t-shirt I use for dusting. (ha!)  I safety pinned the pieces on and threw them in with the other fabric.  Worked like a charm and I didn't have to handwash.  Y'all probably already know all the answers, but just in case - things to ask me about in person (too long here) - why did you put the white/black/green fabric in the wash together -- won't they bleed?  Do you really need a color catcher?  How are you going to dry your quilts now?
Goals for week of July 1

1. Finish prayer quilt.
2. Finish double wedding ring melons.
3. TV work - Primitive Gathering BOM - try to finish June before July block gets here!
4. Finish 1 barn BOM.
5. Experiment with free motioning on the long arm (depends on non-conflicting schedules with Mic).
6. Deliver India's quilt.

Happy sewing!

Report Card for week ending June 24

1. Finish India's quilt (clip threads, label, wash, deliver) - Incomplete
This one is on hold due to indecision.  Still percolating on a decision about some big stitch quilting.

2. Work on star blocks for double wedding ring - easy work, but boring (72 MORE) - Pass

Waiting on HOP fabric.  Decided the kit purple wasn't purple enough.  In absence of fourth color, started melons (they call them melons - they look like feathers to me!)

3. Continue working on Primitive Gathering BOM - handwork - Pass

Primitive Gathering was late getting June to me.  Finished up May block about the time June got here (yesterday).

4. Finish 1 barn BOM - fun work - Pass+

5. Limit myself to 30 minutes internet "looking" time per day - Fail

I didn't time myself, but I did *think* about it when I grabbed the computer.  At least that's a start.

Goal for week of June 24

1.  Make top for prayer quilt.
2.  Make a decision on India's quilt and "gitterdone."
3.  Double wedding ring - Finish star blocks if HOP fabric gets here.  Continue work on melons.

5.  Finish 1 barn BOM.

New Idea

How many new ideas am I going to have???  New way to TRY to keep up with what I am doing.  My ADD is so kicking in because I have a new idea every time I post!!!

Here are pictures of my accomplishments (these have all been accomplished in the last few weeks -not all in ONE week.)  In the future I plan to publish a Sunday round-up of where I am on the WIP's.

Block 5 from Primitive Gathering BOM
(I LOVE the background - Moda Primitive Gatherings - don't know the actual name)

Last two sets for Double Wedding Ring
(I've been piddling with these for months, so they were certainly NOT all done in the last few weeks.)  All eleven sets are now finished.

Finished Set A of the Star part of the double wedding ring blocks

All 72 of them!

Got the binding on India's quilt

Goal for week of June 17

1.  Finish India's quilt (clip threads, label, wash, deliver)

2.  Work on star blocks for double wedding ring - easy work, but boring (72 MORE)

3.  Continue working on Primitive Gathering BOM - handwork

4.  Finish 1 barn BOM - fun work

5.  Limit myself to 30 minutes internet "looking" time per day

That's all folks.  See you next Sunday.
